Clay Oven

11:52
This weeks #GrateRestaurantOfTheWeek is the legendary Clay Oven.
Situated in Jukskei Park in Randburg, this gem is definitely awaiting to be discovered.

Clay Oven is not about mincy-fancy-pants nouvelle/nouveau/haute cuisine.
They are about real food. That’s what we are about : first and second generation Portuguese and Greek Cypriot immigrants making the food they know and grew up with.

Joe is the Chef. He works his kitchen with a determination that would take your breath away. No one can keep up with him… energiser bunny on steroids!

Anyone a fan of Real food? Lets dig in 😁

G-How would you describe your restaurant in 140 characters?
C-FAMILY “PortuGreek” fusion food; combines Portuguese/Cypriot influences… with strong SA roots. Real family food!

G-How did the restaurant’s name come about?
C-An associate offered us the name he’d had registered. We were building an oven; the concept fitted and we took it

G-What is your signature dish? The one everyone keeps coming back for?
C-That’s like asking us which one of our children is our favourite! Trinchado! Moussaka! Tempura veg! Onion rings!...

G-What is your Favourite memory from Clay Oven  ? Was it when you opened, was it when you had a famous celebrity over?
C-Every KID that tells their parents to bring them HERE. No playground no games. They like us and come to us to EAT. That’s special!

Foodie of the week Jozinic

14:19
This weeks Foodie of the week is Jozinic aka Nicola Taylor
Well traveled, Music loving, remote beach loving, this Thai food loving dunked chicken wing guzzling foodie sure has a story to tell.

Lets turn the page and have a peek

G: What is your Favourite food memory? E.g. - is there a Xmas dinner you can never forget or waking up to the smell of a freshly baked cake
J: Taking a private cooking lesson on a remote beach in Thailand before it filled up with tourists. I got chatting with the lady who ran the beach hut where we hit sundowners in the afternoon, and she offered to teach me a 5 course traditional Thai meal with all the classics. The best thai green curry ever.

G: We love Thai food, the flavor combinations are just amazing!

G:Who is Jozinic?
J:
  • music.
  • food. love. curiosity. magic. Heart and soul behind @taylorsgoodfood Always
  • choose love

G: What has been your best restaurant experience?
J: A restaurant in East London, UK called Chapters about 10 years ago. The first time I noticed that I didn’t need salt because the food was seasoned so perfectly. Always learning.

G:What is your favourite dish in the world, something you could almost eat all day every day?
J: I gotta say, pizza. It is such a perfect food; cheese and bread are pure comfort, but you can dress it up or go healthy if you want. It is totally balanced, I could definitely eat it every day in some form.

G:Worst food addiction, ours are hotwings?
J: OMG!!!!!!! I think it’s got to be fried chicken.
Hotwings are in a league of their own but I can inhale a box of dunked wings just as quick. I will never say no to a cronut.

G: Oh no we found another cronut fan.... Usually this is enough reason for us to unfriend someone but for you we will let it slide....

G: Are there any new restaurants or dishes you just recently discovered that you would like to mention?
J: Startup mode doesn’t allow for too much dining out but you gotta support the mates who open new shops, and lets face it,
Sumting Fresh are definitely the originals when it comes to killer fried chicken.
I am also hearting on Glory’s chicken wings, tender and crispy AF!
Also 47 on Grant in Norwood is a magical hidden gem.

G: We fully support a fellow startup-er, its a long, lonely road but luckily there is Grate scenery :-)

G:What is one thing that no one knows about you?

J:The first time I cooked anything was when I was 19. It was a fried egg. They had to take a picture of me to record the evidence.

G: Okay,,,, one day we would love to see that picture

And that's Jozinic

Urbanologi

11:59
This weeks restaurant of the week is Urbanologi.

Based inside the Mad Giant Brewery, in the heart of Jozi, Urbanologi works side by side with the brewery team at Mad Giant Brewery brainstorming and testing new ideas in search of new flavours, ingredients, processes and techniques.

The essence of their food comes from using the highest quality of fresh Asian and local ingredients while harnessing the character of street food with an Avant Garde thought process.

Lets dig in and see what Urbanologi has in store

G: What do you love about Urbanologi?
U: We have a very young team, and the culture that we have is quite electric. Constantly bouncing ideas off of each other, always seeking new ways to stream line our systems, methods of bettering guests experience. It an incredible work environment and it is a very powerful tool. This electric atmosphere is passed on in a very contagious manner to our guests. The atmosphere is very upbeat but relaxed. We try push the envelope somewhat when it come to the food. Always trying to keep our ideas fresh and interesting. As a team we just want to create a unique experience for our guests.

Viva Youth Viva!!!

G: How did the restaurant’s name come about?
U:The name is a combination of three ideas.
  1. Urban, refers to our surrounding. Set up in a warehouse in fox street. The setting is very industrial, bare and edgy. We feed off the energy that the bustling CBD provides.
  2. The ologi, is the science behind what we do. We create dishes that are inspired by the surroundings, hence the coined phrase, “Urban Grande Cuisine “. Our aim is to use the urban space and the science of both food a brewing techniques. We work closely          together with the brewers to provide unique flavours to put onto plates. We strive to create a product that can be appreciated by all.
  3. The “I” on the end is the Japanese connection. Street food. To tie the urban space with a culinary science as well as the Mad Giant Brewery we decided that Asian street food was the perfect way to do this. This can been seen throughout our menu which is broken down into the traditional preparations of street food. Coal fired on the yakitori grill. Steamed, Cured, Frozen and Raw.
Such an intricate name, this just shows the level of dedication that went into the restaurant and the items on the menu

G: What is your signature dish? The one everyone keeps coming back for?
U:We don’t necessarily have a signature dish that we push in the restaurant or in the media. We try and push our signature style, the Urban Grande Cuisine. When someone thinks of Urbanologi, the first thing that pops into their head must be the type of food we produce rather than just a dish. A great deal of thought is put into the way the menu is structured and how the dishes are prepared. We strive for food that is cleverly thought out, packed with flavour that you will never be able to find anywhere else.

G: What is your Favourite memory from Urbanologi? Was it when you opened, was it when you had a famous celebrity over?
U: In terms of celebrities, each to their own I suppose. Everyone gets excited by their own idols. We often have the pastry ladies giddy when musicians show face. There was quite a stir when George from master chef Australia joined us for lunch. However on the whole the collections of memories are the best. Listen to the guys the set up the shop tell you how it used to be and how they spent sleepless nights setting everything up all the way through to the present. So much has been crammed into a short space of time, it holds for some exciting prospects in the future.

G: What is your favourite social media channel and where can Grate App users follow you on social media? Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pintrest
U: Instagram is probably the best form of social media to follow. We aim to give our followers a behind the scenes look at what we do and what we are working at present. Its also a great way to follow the process of how dishes are conceptualised, services are conducted and getting to know who’s preparing your food.
